How do we Re-generate?

We invest in 4 main projects to help Re-generate Planet Earth. All of our projects are based in the UK and many can be visited by our customers.

Your investment will go to the following types of project…

Over the past 150 years as agriculture has increasingly industrialised, huge tonnages of organic matter (carbon) have been depleted from our soils. It is our mission to start putting much of that back.

TREE PLANTING

We are setting out to plant large areas of one of the world’s fastest growing trees, the sterile hybrid Paulownia to rapidly sequester significant amounts of carbon for generations to come.

BIODIVERSITY NET GAIN

Bank Farm near Ashford in Kent will be among the first to develop a range of habitats to enable local biodiversity to thrive. 

CO2 REDUCTION SCHEME

Schools and local institutions will be able to apply for grants from Re-Generation Earth to install apparatus to reduce CO2 outputs and to improve energy efficiency.

High Biomass CO2 Crops

Over the past 150 years as agriculture has increasingly industrialised,  huge tonnages of organic matter (carbon) have been depleted from our soils.  It is our mission to start putting much of that back.  At COP 21,  a group of French scientists proposed a project called 4 per mille when  they calculated that if all the world`s soils increased  organic matter levels by 0.4% per year,  they are capable of sequestering all anthropological CO2.  A big, bold ask BUT it can be done and we intend to turbo charge that process in the UK.

Many farmers are already practicing regenerative agriculture but we intend to go a stage further and ask farmers to grow the crop Lucerne specifically for CO2 capture.  We hear of all sorts of high-tech solutions but at Re-Generation Earth we feel that the process of CO2 capture and storage should remain the natural process that it has been for millions of years and to utilise plants to do the work for us.

Many of the world’s most fertile soils are the result of long periods of fallow cropping whilst allowing biomass to build before being incorporated into the soil.  Some ancient civilisations would allow 10 plus years of no crop to build back fertility.

With our project,  quite simply you invest in a farmer to harvest CO2 and not food crops.  Your investment will go to the farmer to plant rotational crops that absorb large amounts of CO2 on an annual basis and rather than harvest that crop,  the farmer will mulch it back into the soil to store the carbon for many years to come.

In turn,  the farmer will need to use less chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizer in the production of subsequent crops resulting in reducing nitrous oxide emissions –  one of the most harmful greenhouse gases as well as other harmful potential pollutants.

The principle components of crop production are free to many crops.  Sunlight,  C02,  water and nitrogen all fall out the sky for crops like Lucerne and combining that with its huge biomass production it makes it the ideal crop for this use.

The farmer will also see benefits in other ways and principally be able to grow more from less as soils with high organic matter are more fertile,  more able to hold water and to enable excess water to drain freely.  Re-Generating soil organic matter ensures that crop production becomes more climate resilient.

The final benefit of growing Lucerne is that we will ensure that it flowers so that bees and other insects benefit from this crop.  Having a vast area of flowering plants across UK farmland for an extended period of the summer will act as a haven for many insect species,  thus ensuring plentiful food for our massively depleted insect population.  Pollinators such as bees are vital to the production of our food and predatory insects such as hover flies and ladybirds can consume huge quantities of damaging aphids in place of insecticides.

There are very few win, win, win opportunities in life but this is definitely one.

Each farmer that grows these carbon capture crops will share our vision and run their entire business according to regenerative farming methods.

Tree Planting

We are setting out to plant large areas of one of the world’s fastest growing trees, a sterile hybrid of the Paulownia to rapidly sequester significant amounts of carbon for generations to come. The resultant timber will be harvested and manufactured into a range of products and construction materials in order to lock the carbon away for generations to come.

No Re-Generation Earth planted tree will be intentionally burnt.  Brush wood will either be chipped and returned to the soil or turned into Biochar.

 

Once harvested,  Paulownia sprout a new shoot and grow again from the original root thus significantly reducing the growth cycle time and reducing the environmental harm that can be associated with clear felling woodland.  From houses to car parts,  there are endless uses for this natural and versatile material.

It is essential to actively manage woodlands that have been planted for carbon capture as a managed and high yielding woodland will continue to sequester large amounts of carbon.  An unmanaged woodland can soon release its carbon back into the atmosphere and as seen in Australia and California  can lead to catastrophic fires that are a disaster for the climate and biodiversity alike.

We will focus tree planting in two main systems.  Complete afforestation of poor arable and grass land areas where achieving good economic yields of crops is difficult at best and Agroforestry where trees and field crops grow alongside each other for mutual benefits.

Our model is robust,  attractive to landowners and will ensure that significant areas of tree planting will occur,  helping the UK government with its aim to achieve 30,000 ha of  tree planting per year by 2025.

Paulownia produces large flower blooms over a long period that offer food and habitat for many insect species.

There is considerable scope for Paulownia timber to displace a significant proportion of imported timber and to develop a truly regenerative timber industry in the UK.

Biodiversity Net Gain

Bank Farm near Ashford in Kent will be among the first to develop a range of habitats to enable local biodiversity to thrive.  From the smallest insects to the largest indigenous mammals,  many species need a helping hand and your subscription will help to make that happen.

Land committed to the project will be taken out of food production forever to protect its status once the habitats are established.  A fund will also be set up to ensure that should additional management be required in the future then that management will be funded.

All funds generated in the UK will be invested in the UK

All projects will be developed with local NGOs such as County Wildlife Trusts who specialise in the targeted species habitat requirements.  Projects will also be compliant with local authority BNG protocols.

Examples of habitats developed or planned

  • New networks of hedgerows to provide wildlife corridors to ensure safe transit
  • Newt ponds
  • Bat boxes
  • Specialist bird nest boxes
  • Hedgehog habitats with safe havens for them and other small mammals to thrive

CO2 Reduction Scheme

Schools and local institutions will be able to apply for grants from Re-Generation Earth to install apparatus to reduce CO2 outputs and to improve energy efficiency.  From LED light bulbs to solar panels and battery storage,  a range of projects will help to reduce C02 emissions.

The simple fact is that the best way to offset CO2 is to leave it in the form of coal,  oil and gas and there needs to be a massive investment in renewable energy and an electrification of our entire system.

More energy hits the earth from the sun in a single day than is used by mankind in a whole year.  It doesn’t require us to capture and store much of that energy to displace the entire requirement of all fossil fuels.
